    Typical Cases

  • Cases are frequently submitted to verify that a signature is genuine.  There may not be an allegation of forgery, however, an authentication of the signature is required.

  • Another typical case is when there has been allegation of a forged signature.  The signature is examined in an effort to determine whether it is genuine or not.

  • Some cases involve the comparison of handwriting and hand printing on documents.  Anonymous letters or credit card applications for example.

  • Medical records and other documents are examined for evidence of alteration.  This often involves a non-destructive examination of the inks present on the document.

  • A examination for indented writing images typically occurs during the examination of medical records, wills, contracts, anonymous letters, and many other documents.

  • Documents are examined for evidence of page substitution.  Typical cases involve wills, medical records, and contracts.
  • Typical cases also involve the products of office machines such as computer printers, photocopiers, typewriters, and facsimile machines.  Examinations may involve the identification of elimination of the machine that produced the document.
  • The typical case does not require expert testimony, but when testimony has been required, Mr. Shiver has testified as an expert witness in forensic document examination on more than 100 occasions in federal, state and military courts.
